The Uttarakhand government has planned a number of projects to generate electricity by diverting the river's natural course through tunnels built between Gangotri and Uttarkashi. Environmentalists fear that this mega-hydro power project would dry up the 140 km river bed between the two destinations and threaten the lives of thousands of inhabitants. As many as six to eight tunnels are being planned by Uttarakhand between the two places, separated by a distance of around 140 kms, for serving three big hydro-electric projects. Simply put, the river would no more be seen as a roaring one. After the channelling, only a calm narrow stream would be visible while a major portion of the river would move through huge tunnels.
